NEW DRYPOINT Printmaking for BEGINNERS, Saturday 29th of June 2024

€80.00

The workshop will comprise of 1 session Saturday 29th June 11 am - 3pm

Join artist & educator Vicky Smith for this introduction to drypoint printmaking for beginners. This workshop will explore the possibilities of print through the process of drypoint. This is a wonderful introduction to printmaking where you will learn to design, engrave and ink an image to create an edition of prints.

Dry point is a printmaking technique of the intaglio family, in which an image is incised into a plate with a hard-pointed "needle" of sharp metal. In principle, the method is practically identical to engraving. The difference is in the use of tools, and that the raised ridge along the furrow is not scraped or filed away as in engraving. Traditionally the plate was copper but now, acetate, zinc, or plexiglass are also commonly used. Like etching, drypoint is easier to master than engraving for an artist trained in drawing because the technique of using the needle is closer to using a pencil than the engraver’s tool. We will use tin acetate sheets, sharp drypoint tools.

Vicky Smith is a visual artist and arts educator from Galway City. Her practice is rooted in painting and she is currently on the Turps Correspondence Course ‘23-’24, an innovative programme for painters based in the UK.
